The International Criminal Court (ICC) has scheduled the opening of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s trial for Nov. 30, 2026, following a status conference held on May 27, in The Hague.
In a statement, ICC Trial Chamber III said the date was set after considering submissions from the prosecution, defense, and legal representatives of victims, as well as the time needed for the disclosure of evidence and other trial materials.
“This date was set by the Chamber following a Status Conference on this matter and other issues related to the preparation of the trial,” the ICC said.
The tribunal said it would resolve all pending matters and adopt procedures necessary to ensure the “fair and expeditious conduct” of proceedings before the formal opening of trial.
During the status conference, the chamber also laid down several key deadlines leading to the start of the trial.
The second status conference was scheduled for June 23, while prosecutors are expected to submit a provisional list of witnesses by June 29.
A third status conference will be held on July 14.
The prosecution’s final list of witnesses, evidence, and trial brief must meanwhile be submitted by Aug. 31.
Lawyers representing victims were given until Sept. 28 to file their trial brief, while Duterte’s defense team must submit its own trial brief by Oct. 30.
Duterte faces three counts of crimes against humanity linked to killings committed during his administration’s anti-drug campaign.
Pre-Trial Chamber I unanimously confirmed all charges against the former president on April 23, 2026, formally committing him to trial before a Trial Chamber.
The ICC Presidency constituted Trial Chamber III the following day to handle the case.
The chamber is composed of Presiding Judge Joanna Korner, Judge Keebong Paek, and Judge Nicolas Guillou.
The arrest warrant against Duterte was originally issued under seal on March 7, 2025, before it was reclassified as public on March 11, 2025.
Duterte was surrendered to the ICC on March 12, 2025, while his initial appearance before the tribunal took place two days later.
The confirmation of charges hearings were held from Feb. 23 to 27 this year.
The ICC said more detailed information regarding trial proceedings, including livestreaming arrangements and possible public attendance, would be released closer to the trial date.
