The Universidad de Manila (UdM) said on Wednesday it is investigating a faculty member over online remarks about showbiz personality Awra Briguela, while reaffirming its commitment to upholding respect for the LGBTQIA+ community.
UdM President Felma Carlos-Tria said the university has taken note of concerns raised about the incident and that the matter is now being handled in coordination with the administration and the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, in accordance with existing institutional policies and procedures.
The issue stemmed from a social media comment made by a netizen on an article about Briguela, which the actress later called out.
“As an academic institution, the University does not condone behavior or expressions that may be perceived as discriminatory, demeaning, or harmful to any individual,” Tria said.
She added that while the investigation and necessary interventions are ongoing, the university remains committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all, regardless of gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation.
The professor has since submitted his side in response to the notice to explain.
