Panay Bukidnon, UP Visayas research team lauded for book on Panay epics

THE Iloilo Provincial Board commends the book ‘Epics of Panay’ in a resolution.
ILOILO CITY – The Iloilo Provincial Board cited the collaboration between the Panay Bukidnon Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and the research team of the University of the Philippines Visayas after the book Epics of Panay won in the 43rd National Book Awards.
The team behind Humadapnon (Ginlawan): Sugidanon (Epics) of Panay, Book 8, Volume 4 was commended in Resolution No. 2026-429 which was publicly presented during a session on Tuesday, May 26.
The book was recently awarded as Best Book of Poetry in Hiligaynon and Kinaray-a by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC).
Sponsored by ex-officio Esara Aldeguer Javier Co as provincial president of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), the resolution noted that the book elevated “indigenous language and oral traditions into the level of nationally recognized literature.”
The resolution was co-sponsored by Vice Gov. Lee Ann Debuque and ex-officio Amalia Debuque as provincial president of the Liga ng mga Barangay.
Published by UP Press, the award-winning book is traced back to the UP Visayas research that started in 1993. The research in the mountains of Central Panay was led by anthropologist and Prof. Emeritus Alicia P. Magos with associate researcher Anna Razel “Rara” Limoso Ramirez.
Contents were derived from recorded oral narratives chanted by Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan (National Living Treasure) Federico “Tuohan” Caballero, who died in 2024, and became part of the collection of UP Visayas’ Center for West Visayan Studies (CWVS).
As one of the 14 books in total, the eighth volume was aided in translation to Kiniray-a by Panay Bukidnon IPs Anna Caballero and Romulo Caballero.
