Ferrari has just unveiled its first fully-electric car: the Luce. Though no stranger to plug-in hybrids with models like the SF90 and 296 GT, Ferrari is now making the bold step into full electrification with the Luce.
Ferrari has teased this vehicle over the past year with revelations regarding its electric platform as well as a few snippets of portions of its interior. Now, the prancing horse has finally revealed the vehicle in its entirety.
The Luce is unique in that it is a four-door, five-seater, fully-electric Ferrari model. The vehicle’s interior is famously designed by former Apple Chief Designer, Jony Ive.
Exterior
Its design is a stark departure from typical Ferrari styling. The vehicle was penned by LoveForm, Ive’s company, collaborating with Ferrari chief designer Flavio Manzoni and designer Marc Newson.
The Luce was built with a “glass house” design philosophy, with a wraparound glass structure at the center, surrounded by a body with short overhangs all around. The rear retains Ferrari’s trademark round taillights, this time illuminated by LED. Ferrari says the rear was largely inspired by the 360 Modena and 458 Italia, which is quite evident. The result is an unmistakably aerodynamic look for the Luce.
The Luce rolls on massive 23-inch wheels in front and even bigger 24-inch alloys in the back. It boasts of normal doors in front and suicide-style doors behind. This was done to eliminate the B-pillar in the middle, allowing for easier ingress and egress.
Interior
The interior is where the Apple iPhone inspiration is truly evident. It features a mix of physical controls, tasteful use of LCD screens, yet still quite minimalist in execution.
The steering wheel is made from machined and recycled aluminum, taking inspiration from Ferraris of the 60s to the 80s. It integrates the signature “manettino” dial, and buttons for the turn signals, and controls for the car's drive modes, cruise control, parking sensors, suspension settings, and wipers.
The dash boasts of LED gauges designed in an analog-style. The speedometer still retains a physical needle. It also integrates newer readouts like a G-force meter.
The center of the dash has a touchscreen infotainment display with toggle switches. The center island that houses controls for the gear selection, power windows, power locks. Above the driver are cockpit-style controls for S.O.S., headlights, park lights, and launch control.
The Luce comes with a 21-speaker sound system from Ferrari Audio Signature, complete with a 24-channel system and 3,000W amplification.
Power
Powering the Luce is a massive 122-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It’s built on an 800V platform with four electric motors. On a full charge, the Luce drive as far as 530-km under ideal WLTP conditions. It can then be recharged to recover 70 kWh of power in just 20 minutes when hooked up to a DC fast charger that supports up to 350 kW.
The four electric motors combine to produce 1,050 PS of pure electric power, along with an impressive 990 Nm of torque. This allows the Luce to rocket from 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, hit 200 km/h in only 6.8 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 310 km/h.
The Ferrari Luce can be ordered later this year, with prices starting at EUR 520,000 or around P37.2 million (not including taxes and other fees).
