As Muslims in the country and around the world observed Eid al-Adha on Wednesday, May 27, the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (PAPRU) called on Filipinos to uphold unity and compassion at a time marked by conflict and division.
In his message for the 2026 Feast of Sacrifice, Presidential peace adviser Mel Senen Sarmiento said the occasion carries lessons that go beyond religion as the commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience and faith remains relevant amid global unrest and social tensions.
“In a world confronted by conflict, division, and hardship, Eid al-Adha is a powerful reminder of the enduring values of faith, sacrifice, compassion for others, and unity,” Sarmiento said.
Sarmiento said Eid al-Adha “teaches us that true strength does not only come from one’s devotion to Allah, but from a willingness to serve others and work together for the common good.”
Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s holiest feasts, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, in obedience to Allah before a lamb was provided instead. The celebration is marked by prayers, acts of charity, and the sharing of food with family and communities, and signals the end of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
The government continues efforts to sustain peace initiatives in Mindanao and strengthen reconciliation programs involving Moro communities and former combatants.
The OPAPRU has been leading normalization and peacebuilding programs tied to the Bangsamoro peace process.
Sarmiento underscored the need for unity despite differences in belief and background.
“While Filipinos may come from different faiths and walks of life, we are united by our shared values of empathy, generosity, and selflessness,” he said.
He added that the example of Prophet Ibrahim should inspire Filipinos “to become instruments of peace, understanding, and solidarity in our communities.”
The OPAPRU chief also extended greetings to Muslim Filipinos celebrating the feast.
“May Allah continue to bless you and your families with peace, happiness, and prosperity. Eid Mubarak!” he said.
Earlier, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared May 27 a regular holiday nationwide for the observance of Eid al-Adha through Proclamation No. 1264. The Commission on Muslim Filipinos recommended the date based on the 1447 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar.
The holiday is observed under Republic Act No. 9849, which declares the 10th day of Zhul Hijja a national holiday with a movable date.
