Maynilad activates raw water reservoir at La Mesa plant
West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. has begun partially operating its new raw water reservoir at La Mesa water treatment plant (WTP) in Quezon City, allowing the facility to store up to 67 million liters of raw water to help stabilize supply during the dry season.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 26, Maynilad said the initial operation involves one converted lagoon within La Mesa WTP, supporting efforts to improve operational flexibility during periods of reduced inflows from the Angat-Ipo Dam system due to lower rainfall or allocation adjustments.
The project, which is targeted for full completion by June 2026, involves the conversion of former sludge lagoons within La Mesa compound into a six-meter-deep impounding reservoir capable of storing up to 200 million liters of raw water.
Previously used for sludge handling during the treatment process, the lagoons were repurposed into a dedicated raw water storage facility to provide additional supply support for treatment operations.
Once fully operational, the reservoir will provide La Mesa WTP 1 with an added raw water buffer to help sustain stable plant operations and water service during periods of lower inflows.
The facility may also function as a settling basin during periods of elevated turbidity by allowing suspended particles in raw water to settle naturally before entering the treatment process.
“This facility enhances our ability to manage raw water variability and maintain stable treatment operations, particularly during periods of lower inflow or higher turbidity,” said Maynilad Chief Operating Officer (COO) Christopher Jaime T. Lichauco.
Once completed, the facility will become Maynilad’s first dedicated raw water storage reservoir and will complement the company’s existing 38 treated water reservoirs across the west zone.
Maynilad said it continues to invest in infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening system resilience and ensuring reliable water service for customers.
The company serves the west zone concession area of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), covering parts of Metro Manila and Cavite province.
