Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla on Tuesday, May 26, said the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) may file a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan against Sen. Joel Villanueva within the next two weeks in connection with the flood control issue.
According to Remulla, the case involving Villanueva was already nearing completion, although the OMB was still refining the information and supporting evidence before filing it in court.
“Of course hindi lang namin i-center si Jinggoy. Mayroon pa kaming tinatapos rin, at ‘pag dumating ang panahon, mai-file na rin namin ’yung kay Senator Joel Villanueva. ’Yan ang isang hinog na rin, pero kailangan kasi pulido ang pagkakalahad ng impormasyon at ebidensyang kasama (Of course we will not focus only on Jinggoy. We are also finishing another one, and when the time comes, we will also be able to file the case against Senator Joel Villanueva. That one is also ripe already, but the presentation of the information and accompanying evidence has to be polished),” Remulla said during a press briefing in Quezon City.
When asked about the possible timeframe for the filing of the case, the Ombudsman replied: “Baka dalawang linggo pa. Painit nang painit ’yan (Maybe around two more weeks. It’s getting hotter and hotter).”
Also, Remulla disclosed that the OMB was preparing additional cases involving other lawmakers.
“Marami pa kaming hinahanda na kaso. Basta dahan-dahan ilalatag namin ’yan ng sunod-sunod, pero ’yung dalawa muna ngayon (We are preparing many more cases. We will gradually lay them out one after another, but those two come first for now),” he said.
The Ombudsman also said that it was continuing its investigation into alleged irregularities involving lawmakers in the House of Representatives.
“Pinu-pursue din natin ’yung sa Congress, sa House, kung ganoon din ang attitude ng Committee on Appropriations, baka naman maniwala na sila pagfinile-an na namin ’yung ibang congressman, kasi marami din kaming nakahanda para sa mga congressman (We are also pursuing those in Congress, in the House. If the Committee on Appropriations maintains the same attitude, perhaps they will believe us once we start filing cases against other congressmen because we are also preparing many cases against congressmen),” Remulla said.
The Ombudsman did not disclose further details regarding the allegations involving Villanueva.
