REFLECTIONS TODAY
A man who enthusiastically came to Jesus to ask how to inherit eternal life most probably expected to hear “Bravo!” that is, Jesus’ approval for a life of following the commandments. Instead— out of love for him—Jesus tells him to let go of his many possessions to find the true treasure: the joy of giving of one’s self for God’s Kingdom. The challenge is refused—and there is only sadness at the end. Power, security, and honor afforded by wealth are so difficult to let go, causing Jesus to remark, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” (Mk 10:23). Peter, who acts as the spokesperson of the disciples, articulates the problem in Mt 19:27 that bothers them as it did the rich man: “We have given up everything and followed you.” He adds: “What will there be for us?”
Jesus assures his disciples that no one who follows him will ever lose what is really important, either in this life or in the life to come. God will reward each one… a hundred times! The expression “a hundred times” or “hundredfold” is used in the Bible to indicate a rich harvest, a blessing from God. The message of Jesus is obvious: God knows how to take care of his own. He cannot be outdone in generosity! On our part, we must be sure that our motives are right: “For my (Jesus’) sake and that of the Gospel” (Mk 8:35).
First Reading • 1 Pt 1:10-16
Beloved: Concerning the salvation of your souls, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and investigated it, investigating the time and circumstances that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the glories to follow them. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you with regard to the things that have now been announced to you by those who preached the Good News to you through the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels longed to look.
Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly, and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Like obedient children, do not act in compliance with the desires of your former ignorance but, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct, for it is written, Be holy because I am holy.
