PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur — Visayas bets conquered the opening day of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa on Monday, May 25, delivering gold medals with one in record-breaking fashion at the Datu Lipus Makapandong–Governor Democrito O. Plaza Sports Complex.
Chrisia Mae Tajarros of Eastern Visayas wouldn't be denied of defending her title in the secondary girls’ 3,000-meter run, clocking 10 minutes and 4.76 seconds to rule the event she also topped in Ilocos Norte last year.
She was a little more than a second short of smashing the 10:03.4 record set by Davao Region's Meagay Niñura in 2016.
Nevertheless, her victory was worthy of celebration.
“Confident lang po na kaya ko ‘to and nag-training ako ng halos isang taon dahil once in a year lang itong Palaro,” she said. “Grateful pa rin po ako kasi sabi nga po be patient first kasi when the time is right, God and I will make it happen.”
Tajarros' teammate, Angel Lumacang, came in second (10:16.24), while Davao's Charles Cos took the bronze (10.17.20).
Negros Island Region bet Marjen Iwayan, meanwhile, stole the show in elementary girls’ javelin throw event after heaving the 300-gram spear to a new meet record of 47.20 meters. Jeza Mae Eulogio of Western Visayas plucked the silver (43.29m), while Ilocos pride Jhona Amber Baliscao settled for bronze (41.58m)
NIR athlete Christine Rose Toquero also secured gold in the secondary girls’ division with a throw of 45.22 meters.
Meanwhile, Prince Ortiz of the Ilocos Region bagged the gold medal in the elementary boys’ long jump with his effort of 5.88 meters, beating Northern Mindanao’s Jonry Lumantas (5.74m) and SOCCKSARGEN’s Garry Malatabon (5.48m).
