Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval on Monday, May 25, said the city government will broaden education support programs for Malabueño youth following the City of Malabon University’s (CMU) Institutional Recognition from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
Speaking at the city government’s flag-raising ceremony, Sandoval said the CHED recognition is expected to strengthen CMU’s academic standing and restore access to national scholarship programs and student financial assistance.
She said education remains a top priority of the local government, emphasizing that real progress is measured by how opportunities are expanded for young people through quality education.
Sandoval noted that CMU previously lost eligibility for UNIFAST and free higher education benefits in Academic Year 2022–2023 due to compliance and institutional deficiencies that occurred before her administration.
“However, I also want to remind our fellow residents that while we have been processing all the compliance requirements needed to restore CMU’s eligibility for UNIFAST from 2023 up to the present, we never neglected the education of our young Malabueño students,” she said said.
To sustain operations, the local government allocated more than ₱150 million annually to support CMU and maintain uninterrupted educational services.
The mayor said the city government implemented reforms in CMU, including improvements in governance systems, program certifications, documentation processes, and compliance with CHED quality assurance standards.
She added that these reforms aim to fully restore CMU’s access to national education assistance programs while strengthening the university’s institutional foundation.
Sandoval said the development brings renewed hope for working-class families in Malabon, stressing that no student should be left behind due to institutional challenges.
She thanked university officials, faculty members, students, parents, and city personnel for their role in achieving the milestone.
The city government reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthen CMU and expand education support initiatives to produce more competitive graduates and support community development in Malabon.
