'Makararaos din tayo': Mayor Isko assures relief for Parola fire victims
Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, on Monday, May 25, expressed optimism that families displaced by the recent fire in the Parola Compound, Binondo, will recover, as he assured them of continued support from the city government.
During the regular flag-raising ceremony on May 25, the mayor acknowledged the difficult days ahead for more than 2,000 families who lost their homes in the blaze.
The blaze reportedly broke out in the residential area of Parola Compound in Binondo, a densely populated coastal community known for its tightly packed homes made mostly of light materials.
Flames quickly spread through the neighborhood, fanned by strong winds and narrow pathways, making it difficult for firefighters to access the inner sections of the compound.
“It’s a very challenging week ahead of us with our fellow Manileños affected by the fire that happened the other day,” Domagoso said.
Affected families are currently taking temporary shelter at Delpan Sports Complex, where the city government continues to provide food, water, and other basic necessities. At the same time, assessment and recovery efforts are ongoing.
Despite the scale of the incident, the Manila chief executive vowed that the local government is working to provide immediate assistance and relief to affected residents.
“In our own little way, gagawan natin ng paraan (We will find a way) within the day, we can bring some good news to our fellow Manileños,” he added.
Domagoso remained hopeful about the recovery of the displaced families, invoking faith amid hardship.
“After the rain, there’s a rainbow. May awa ang Diyos, makararaos din tayo,” he said.
The mayor also commended personnel of the Manila Department of Social Welfare for their nonstop efforts in assisting fire victims from the onset of the incident up to the present.
