The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned on Sunday, May 24 of possible floods and landslides in Mindanao, Eastern Visayas, and Palawan due to rains brought by the trough of a low-pressure area (LPA) spotted outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said the LPA inside the PAR has already dissipated, but the other LPA located 2,170 kilometers east of Southern Mindanao as of 8 a.m. continues to affect parts of the country.
“Etong low-pressure area na ito, nananatiling mababa ang tsansa na maging isang ganap na bagyo in the next 24 to 48 hours (This low-pressure area remains unlikely to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 to 48 hours),” Torres said.
Despite the low chance of intensification, she said the trough or extension of the LPA continues to bring rains over Palawan, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, and Mindanao.
“Kaya ingat lalo na sa mga inuulan noong mga nakaraang araw pa sa mga banta ng pagbaha o hindi kaya pagguho ng lupa (Residents in areas that have been experiencing rains in recent days should remain cautious against possible flooding and landslides),” Torres said.
By Monday, May 25, rainy weather is still expected over Palawan, although by Tuesday, May 26, rains may become confined to southern Palawan.
The trough of the LPA is also expected to continue affecting Mindanao, Southern Leyte, and Eastern Samar through Monday, while by Tuesday, rains may mainly affect Mindanao.
By Wednesday, May 27, Torres said rainy weather may prevail over the western section of Mindanao.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
The rest of the Visayas may also expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with localized thunderstorms, but more frequent thunderstorm activity is possible over the southern portion of the region.
Although some areas have been experiencing rains, PAGASA said high heat index levels continue to be observed in several parts of the country.
Torres said Metro Manila recorded a heat index of 43 degrees Celsius on Saturday, May 23, while the highest heat index was monitored at Sangley Point in Cavite at 48 degrees Celsius.
For Sunday, the heat index in Metro Manila is forecast to range from 43 to 44 degrees Celsius.
The highest heat index may reach 46 degrees Celsius in Dagupan City in Pangasinan, San Ildefonso in Bulacan, Sangley Point in Cavite, and San Jose in Occidental Mindoro, Torres added.
Meanwhile, no gale warning remains in effect over any of the country’s seaboards thus small boats and other sea vessels are safe to sail.
