Mayor Isko leads on-site aid push for 7K Parola fire victims
Amid the charred remains of what used to be tightly packed homes, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Sunday, May 24, personally inspected the ground zero of the massive fire that ripped through Parola Compound in Delpan, Binondo, as the city government ramped up relief efforts for 7,123 displaced residents.
The mayor, together with Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, inspected the fire-hit area and coordinated relief operations on the ground to ensure immediate needs were addressed. Manila Department of Social Welfare (MDSW) Chief Jay Dela Fuente also helped spearhead the distribution of aid to affected families.
As part of initial response efforts, the city provided hot meals, drinking water, toiletries, and tents to families who were forced to evacuate and spend the night either in evacuation centers or in open areas near the fire scene.
In a separate but related relief activity under the city’s Kaagapay Program, Domagoso also led the distribution of assistance for District 1 residents in Tondo.
“Ang gusto ko, sa hirap ng buhay ngayon, gusto kong maramdaman ninyo iyong gobyernong hindi ninyo hinanap, iyong gobyerno mismo ang humanap sa inyo (I want that, in today’s difficult times, you feel a government you did not have to seek out—the government itself is the one that comes to you),” Domagoso said.
The city government continues to roll out assistance to the 7,123 individuals from 2,134 families affected by the fire, which destroyed 1,266 structures in Barangay 275, Zone 25.
Authorities said relief and recovery operations remain ongoing, with special attention to vulnerable groups including minors and senior citizens, as the city coordinates further aid distribution and support services.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, while the Manila government continues to assess long-term recovery needs for thousands of displaced residents.
