MEDIUM RARE
As a sometime, somewhat professional kibitzer whenever I catch my friends from Baguio Country Club (BCC) putting their heads together over cookies and iced tea to discuss “latest developments,” I am happy to report that Baguio is back on track as the summer capital of the Philippines.
Anthony de Leon, BCC general manager, put a smile on the faces of his audience, including Rico Agcaoili, Vicky de los Reyes, Lin Bildner and her son Maxie, and Rorie Montemayor, by telling them two days ago, “The worst is over” as far as the fuel crisis is concerned. That’s right, tourists and “bakasyonistas” from the lowlands are driving up, the high prices of fuel notwithstanding, such that no wedding that has been scheduled for weeks and months ahead has been canceled or put on hold, Alleluia! – a sentiment first expressed by Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong when he revealed a few weeks ago that tourist traffic was back 60 percent.
In addition, Anthony said, no renovation or improvement on the grounds and structures of BCC already started or scheduled has been put on hold. That being the case, Anthony felt he had time to spend one or two days in Makati for his personal business.
Personally, I cannot imagine a BCC without a GM Anthony! Indeed, you could say he comes with the territory. Speaking of which, and quoting the GM, construction of the Presidential Suite facing the golf course and cottages has been completed. In addition, construction is 40 percent done on two other suites. If I’m not mistaken, the club is building 12 houses on Outlook Drive, I suppose for sale to members.
On my next trip to Baguio, I will book two hours for a full body massage plus two legs at the BCC spa. Ms. Bildner is scandalized that after all this time I haven’t set foot there, let alone two!
Meanwhile, I look forward to December – Christmas is like nothing else when it’s celebrated in Baguio! But even before Dec. 25, there will be Dec. 15 to memorialize the good times I had with Nanoy Ilusorio, to whom BCC was home (while to me it was a living dream – the air, the scent of pine, the magic of mountains and clouds).
