When we discuss the Y2K revival of recent years, it is less about nostalgia and more about a “remixed memory.” It is not about a perfect recreation, but about bringing the fantasy of an era into the present. Think of flip phones as bag charms, the translucent aesthetic echoed in modern footwear, or Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's minimalist dressing through a “clean girl” lens.
But some things are just too iconic to do a total overhaul, and among those are fragrances. Y2K sub-aesthetics hold unique scent identities so deeply tied to memory and emotion that even decades later, they remain instantly recognizable. That is exactly what we experienced when luxury beauty and fragrance distribution company Luxasia relaunched two global perfume brands in the Philippines: Juicy Couture and John Varvatos.
Last May 13 at Osteria Antica in Podium Mall, Mandaluyong City, the company took OG fans and new frag heads on a trip down memory lane as they sniffed scents that were opposites—one ultra-feminine, the other refined and edgy—but both capturing the spirit of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
McBling in a bottle
Rhinestones, velour tracksuits, party-girl excess, and pink are some of the things that define the McBling aesthetic. One brand that perfectly encapsulates all those elements is Juicy Couture. Established in Los Angeles in 1997, it has been known for its signature blend of casual luxury and feminine glamour. Over the years, it has evolved into a lifestyle brand, going beyond its hallmark velour tracksuits to offer handbags, jewelry, and fragrances.
Leading its perfume department is the bestselling Viva La Juicy collection. A celebration of exuberance and confidence, the line invites women to be bold, extra, and spontaneous—something that continues to resonate with the younger market today. Its fragrance notes include mandarin, wild berries, honeysuckle, gardenia, jasmine, amber, caramel, vanilla, sandalwood, and praline.
Another beloved fragrance collection from the brand is the Oui Juicy Couture Play line. With bottles designed to literally stack on top of each other, the collection mirrors the early-2000s fascination with maximalism, charm bracelets, and colorful vanity culture. Each scent can be worn on its own, but can also be layered to create a fragrance that is uniquely yours.
Indie sleaze scents
On the other end of the Y2K aesthetic spectrum is indie sleaze, with its “too cool to care” energy defined by leather jackets, nightlife culture, and moody vibes. Those elements are also associated with the work of American designer John Varvatos. When he launched his label in 2000, he redefined modern menswear through a fusion of refined tailoring, old-world craftsmanship, and rock-and-roll attitude.
That same philosophy was adapted into his line of fragrances. From the fresh sophistication of the Artisan collection to the bold spirit of the XX collection, John Varvatos fragrances continue to embody confidence, creativity, and modern refinement for every man.
In the Artisan collection, the handwoven flask-shaped bottle is the ultimate embodiment of luxury in its natural form. The line includes Artisan Blu, an ode to the freshness of the Mediterranean coast; Pure, with the crisp and clean scent inspired by the lush citrus groves of Xalapa, Mexico; and the dark and sensual Black, with notes of neroli and leather.
Beyond the bottles, branding, and aesthetic, what these Y2K fragrances ultimately bring to the vanity table is personality. Let these scents inspire you to never be afraid to be expressive, excessive, and emotionally loud.
Juicy Couture and John Varvatos fragrances are now available at Rustan’s, SM, Look, Robinsons, and Landmark, as well as on Lazada and Shopee.
