A perfect photograph is the result of countless images turned down. For Kevin Pineda, these shunned images deserve a second chance to tell their story. In “Fragmentia: Oculations of Reality,” Kevin transforms discarded images, breathing new life into them.
BEHIND THE LENS Kevin Pineda
Based on the curatorial notes, the rejected image returns, viewers are left to wonder what the discarded image possibly knows. Why has it been set aside? What secrets do the polished images have that these rejects originally showed? We are left with a bewildered curiosity as we try to seek these hidden traits from the photographs presented.
Most of the photographs seem inspired by fashion photography. A fitting choice, given how fast-paced and no-room-for-rejects the fashion world can be. But, rather than focusing on the model or their outfit, the photographs we see find themselves distorted, blurred, and deconstructed. Some have tears through them, providing a glimpse into what lies within. Though these images are supposedly rejects, damaged, and not worth the limelight, Kevin’s presentation of them shows otherwise. To a point wherein they likely even surpass the beauty presented by the final image.
Having this sort of eye for imagery is no easy feat; it’s the work of years of training. Kevin has been to far-off places throughout Europe and Asia to train his craft. He first trained in interior architecture at the London Metropolitan University. Later on, he would find himself as an apprentice within the Galleria Lorcan O’Neill in Rome. There, he was exposed to the works of world-renowned artists like Tracey Emin and Anselm Kiefer.
Kevin’s “Fragmentia: Oculations of Reality” is on display at the Spruce Gallery in Ortigas City.
