DOT, Intramuros honor OFWs with free heritage access and guided tours
The Department of Tourism (DOT) is opening the gates of the historic Walled City for a week-long celebration intended to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
In a statement, the DOT said OFWs and returning migrant workers may enjoy free entry to two of Intramuros’ premier heritage attractions — Fort Santiago and Centro de Turismo Intramuros — as part of a special initiative aimed at giving Filipino workers abroad a meaningful and memorable homecoming experience from May 25 to 31.
The week-long offering, also facilitated by the Intramuros Administration, also includes free guided heritage tours, allowing OFWs and their families or companions to reconnect with Philippine history, culture, and identity through immersive storytelling and exploration within the historic district.
“We want to acknowledge the immense hard work our OFWs perform every single day across the globe. Our goal is to express our gratitude by giving them the time to reconnect with their families and our culture,” said DOT Secretary Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay.
We want to evoke the nostalgia of the days when families routinely took the weekend to walk around Luneta Park, bringing back those cherished memories and offering a relaxed, meaningful space to bond right next door in the historic heart of Manila,” she added.
By opening Intramuros’ historic landmarks free of charge, the DOT chief said the initiative seeks not only to honor OFWs for their sacrifices, but also to encourage family bonding and foster a deeper appreciation for Philippine culture and heritage among returning Filipinos and their loved ones.
Interested visitors may present their valid Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC) and membership card issued by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. Each eligible OFW may bring up to four companions
