AdventEnergy expands Mindanao push with Davao cold storage power deal
Aboitiz-led AdventEnergy Inc. expanded its footprint in Mindanao region’s logistics sector after securing a supply deal with Viking Cold Storage Inc. to power its operations in Davao City.
In a statement on Thursday, May 21, the retail electricity supply (RES) arm of Aboitiz Power Corp. (AboitizPower) said it signed an 896-kilowatt (kW) power supply agreement (PSA) to provide electricity to Viking’s one-hectare (ha) cold storage facility in Bunawan district.
The strategic facility features advanced loading docks, freezer and chiller rooms, an ethylene glycol refrigeration system connected to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, and two 10-metric-ton (MT) blast freezers designed to preserve food quality.
Located near Davao City’s primary airport, seaport, and downtown district, the facility caters to businesses requiring temperature-controlled logistics to extend product shelf life.
The partnership marks AdventEnergy’s aggressive expansion into Mindanao following the Energy Regulatory Commission’s (ERC) implementation of the retail competition and open access (RCOA) program in the region in 2024.
Under the RCOA regime, qualified contestable consumers—or those with high electricity consumption—are given the flexibility to bypass traditional distribution utilities and choose their own electricity suppliers to secure more competitive rates.
Catherine Del Villar-Pasilaban, AdventEnergy vice president for retail energy sales and services, said reliable power is critical to sustaining the region’s food supply chain.
“The facilities we power do not operate in isolation. Rather, they are part of a chain that feeds communities. In the cold chain industry, reliable power is not optional, but a critical business imperative that keeps food safe, fresh, and on the table,” she said.
Jimmy Ngo, Viking Cold Storage president, said entering the retail electricity market provides the company with the operational stability needed to serve its growing clientele.
“Viking Cold Storage was built to set the highest standard for cold storage in the Philippines. Entering the retail electricity market gives us the confidence that our facility will have the reliable, competitive energy it needs to deliver for our clients,” Ngo said.
The government has ramped up its support for the cold chain sector, with the Department of Agriculture (DA) allocating ₱3 billion for 99 cold storage facilities nationwide to mitigate postharvest losses.
The agreement further expands AdventEnergy’s growing portfolio in the cold chain industry, which recently included a retail supply contract with Frabelle Cold Storage Corp. covering two facilities in Navotas City.
So far, AdventEnergy energizes over 650 commercial and industrial facilities and is considered one of the leading retail electricity suppliers. - Gabriell Christel Galang
