Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara lauded the Philippine delegation that bagged six awards in an international science and engineering fair held in the United States.
The Philippine delegation was composed of 16 learner-researchers and secured Grand Awards and four Special Awards across multiple science and innovation categories during the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona from May 9-15.
“The students’ success reflects the potential of Filipino learners when they are
given support, guidance, and opportunities to pursue research and innovation,’ said Angara. The Filipino learner-researcher delegates came from Angeles City Science High School, Quezon City Science High School, and Alaminos City National High School.
Their winning research projects were focused on energy, software design, and physics and astronomy.
Nathan Andrew P. Canilao, Pierre Phoella G. Ilagan, and Asher John G. Garcia of Angeles City Science High School won the 2nd Grand Award in the Energy: Sustainable Materials and Design category, with a cash prize of $2,400, for their project WinDTurbinePower.
The team also received the Third Prize: Special Award for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Stewardship, with a cash prize of $2,000. They were coached by Lolita G. Bautista.
Jose Rafael Cayabyab, Cassandra Lipango, and Eirah Riduca of Quezon City Science High School won the 3rd Grand Award for Software Design Category for ViSMo, an AI-integrated vital status monitoring robot with Internet of Things features.
The team also received the Arizona State University Scholarship Award and the Society for Science Alumni Award. They were coached by Genevieve Vasquez.
Charly David T. Manuel of Alaminos City National High School also earned recognition in the Physics and Astronomy category, receiving the Patent and Trademark Office Society First Prize Award, with a cash prize of $500. He was coached by Kris Cristhopher C. Dela Cruz.
Angara also lauded the schools, families, and partner institutions that supported the Philippine delegation, emphasizing that the awards reflect the importance of sustained investment in science education, student research, and innovation pathways for Filipino learners.
This year’s Regeneron ISEF brought together more than 1,700 young
researchers from over 60 countries, regions, and territories.
