After enduring over 11 years of development, the indie animation series “Gameoverse” has quickly taken the Internet by storm.
Glitch Productions, the team behind the worldwide success of “The Amazing Digital Circus,” recently debuted the pilot episode on their YouTube channel. As of writing, it has already surpassed nine million views. Behind the pilot is Australian animator Ross O’Donovan, better known online as RubberRoss or RubberNinja. He is joined by fellow Newgrounds animator alumni Arin “Egoraptor” Hanson, who works as a writer of the show, alongside being the second half of the Game Grumps let’s play YouTube channel.

“Gameoverse” follows the story of Kit, Kaboodle, and Gobbles, a trio of video game protagonists exploring other video game worlds. Under the Farcade organization, they are tasked with stopping the heroes of each world from defeating their opponents, as doing so would lead to that video game world’s destruction. Meanwhile, a rival group known as Syntax is hellbent on harvesting data from the destroyed worlds. Basically, the good guys need to stop other good guys from defeating villains to keep the universe intact. A confusing premise, but an intriguing one to say the least.

Animation-wise, “Gameoverse” certainly has an exciting feel to it. Characters are given so much life in their movements. There are some style changes within the pilot that act as Easter eggs to popular video games. Ross and Arin have evidently worked hard in crafting a world that will have viewers locked in. Plus, the voice actors do a wonderful job of bringing life to each character. Among those featured in the pilot are Erica Lindbeck (“Helluva Boss”) as Kit, YouTuber JSchlatt as Kaboodle, and Arin as Gobbles. Voice actors like Chris Sabat of “Dragon Ball Z” fame and Elsie Lovelock from the“Poppy Playtime” franchise also lend their talent to voice characters in the pilot. Michael Cusack, co-creator of Adult Swim’s “Smiling Friends,” can also be heard. They also pulled in big names for the pilot’s music, hiring the likes of Grant Kirkhope (“Goldeneye 007,” “Banjo and Kazooie”) and Jake Kaufman (“Shovel Knight”).

What’s even more amazing is the amount of dedication Ross has put into bringing this series to life. Originally, he started work on the series as Flash animations back in 2009. He would later post them on the Flash animation site Newgrounds, where he first met Arin. Together with Arin, Ross started to pitch the show to various networks in hopes of getting it picked up. After facing rejections, he decided to work on it independently instead. Glitch Productions picked it up in 2017 after Ross connected with its owners, Kevin and Luke Lerdwichagul.
With the instant success it found online, “Gameoverse” is well on the path of being greenlit by Glitch Productions. This marks an incredible boost toward the online animator community. With independent shows like “Gameoverse” and “The Amazing Digital Circus” taking off successfully, it tells us that small creators are crucial to creating art beloved by all.
