Metrobank raises online deposit rates to 5% to capture savings shift
Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. (Merobank), the second-largest private universal bank by assets, has increased interest rates on its digital time deposits to as high as five percent per annum amid persistent inflationary pressures and heightened financial responsibilities.
As local savers grow increasingly deliberate about asset allocation, Metrobank said the adjusted pricing framework, which took effect May 15, 2026, aims to incentivize digital savings by providing a predictable yield structure through the lender’s mobile application and web-based platforms.
Under the revised tiering system, the maximum rate of five percent is accessible to depositors deploying balances of ₱10 million pesos and above for tenors ranging between 180 and 364 days.
For identical durations, entry-level tiers starting from ₱10,000 to ₱199,999 will yield 4.250 percent per annum, while mid-tier placements between ₱200,000 and ₱999,999 carry a 4.500 percent interest rate. High-value retail accounts holding between ₱1 million and ₱9,999,999 will earn 4.750 percent over the same semi-annual to annual period.
Shorter tenors have also seen structural rate calibrations. Placements fixed for 60 to 179 days earn between 4.125 percent for the lowest tier and 4.750 percent for the highest tier. Meanwhile, ultra-short-term commitments maturing within 30 to 59 days provide yields spanning from 4.125 percent to 4.5 percent depending on the volume of capital deployed.
The adjustment arrives as Philippine financial institutions navigate an evolving retail environment where consumers prioritize security alongside yield optimization.
Metrobank, which was recently recognized by international industry publication The Asian Banker as the strongest bank in the country, is leveraging its balance sheet stability to draw in fresh liquidity.
To broaden access to the high-yield digital framework, the Manila-based lender is allowing new customers to unlock these time-deposit rates by first opening an electronic savings account via its main mobile application.
This multi-layered digital onboarding path highlights the industry’s reliance on integrated retail ecosystems to maintain sticky deposit bases as traditional brick-and-mortar operations face rising overheads.
