Elite and collegiate runners were tested in a new type of challenge as the 2XU Speed Series kicked off last weekend.
After holding its 2-kilometer Speed Run at Ayala Triangle in Makati City, where the likes of Far Eastern University and national team standouts Alfrence Braza and Edna Magtubo and Jose Rizal University’s Dhem AJ Sabanal Monton reigned supreme last May 17, the Speed Series is primed to stage its second and third legs in the coming months.
“It’s really unique, because we want to focus on performance, rather than long-distance running. It's an opportunity also, a platform for the athlete to shine, like,” said One of the Kind Asia CEO Allan Majadillas during Tuesday’s PSA Forum presented by San Miguel Corporation, PSC, Philippine Olympic Committee, MILO, and the country’s 24/7 sports app ArenaPlus.
“It’s really intense, that these guys are proof that they can share their experience in the run. We’re excited to launch this speed series powered by 2XU, so we came up with an event that is performance-based,” he added.
According to Majadillas, the second part of the series is set on July 26 in Baguio, while the third and final leg is in Boracay with the date soon to be announced.
There, teams are composed of 10 members with every participant taking two kilometers per runner. Individual events are also included. Most of the athletes in the first leg were coming from the UAAP as the meet prioritized the development of the collegiate bets.
“So we really want to have more on athletics’ rising stars who will eventually represent the country. We really want to support them,” said Worship Acosta, a multi-sport coach who served as a UAAP Tournament Director. “We want them to develop and become national stars in the future.
