AboitizPower's Therma South inks first EPSA to power Misamis Occidental
An Aboitiz Power Corp. (AboitizPower) subsidiary has inked a two-megawatt (MW) emergency power supply agreement (EPSA) with Misamis Occidental I Electric Cooperative Inc. (MOELCI-I) to reinforce grid reliability in the province.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 19, Therma South Inc. (TSI) said it secured an emergency power procurement agreement with the electric coop, aimed at mitigating potential supply gaps and ensuring uninterrupted electricity for consumers across Oroquieta City, as well as the municipalities of Aloran, Lopez Jaena, Plaridel, Calamba, Baliangao, Sapang Dalaga, and Concepcion.
The transaction marks the first-ever EPSA executed by TSI, highlighting the power firm’s strategic pivot to flexible contract mechanisms amid tightening supply dynamics in Mindanao grid.
An EPSA is a short-term contract designed to bypass the standard energy procurement process to avoid immediate power curtailment or potential blackouts. By exempting itself from the competitive selection process (CSP), a power provider is allowed to supply electricity to the electric coop for a limited period.
“Our partnership with AboitizPower has always been rooted in reliability and mutual trust, and this EPSA is a reflection of that,” said MOELCI-I general manager Guilvin Medina, noting that TSI has been the cooperative’s baseload power supplier for over a decade.
For his part, AboitizPower Head of Revenue Operations James Yu reiterated the group’s commitment to supporting its distribution utility (DU) partners during critical grid contingencies.
“At TSI and AboitizPower, we don’t just provide power—we stand by our partners in every situation, including the critical moments when they need us most,” Yu said.
Mindanao’s energy landscape has become increasingly volatile following its integration into the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), prompting power generators and electric cooperatives (ECs) to forge bilateral safety nets against price spikes and capacity deficits.
TSI operates a 300-MW coal-fired power plant in Davao City and Sta. Cruz town, Davao del Sur province.
It supplies electricity to over 20 electric co-ops and distribution utilities across Mindanao region, including Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Butuan, Zamboanga, Kidapawan, Cotabato, Tagum, Agusan, Surigao, Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental. - Gabriell Christel Galang
