MACACUA
DAVAO CITY – The governors of the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi expressed support on Tuesday, May 19, to the move of Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua to instill reforms in the region.
In separate statements, Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal "Bombit" Alonto Adiong Jr. and Tawi-Tawi Gov. Yshmael "Mang" Sali also expressed support to Macacua as concurrent minister of the Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education (MBHTE), following the removal of MBHTE chief Mohagher Iqbal effective May 18 amid the Commission on Audit (COA) report that exposed over ₱2.2 billion in alleged questionable procurement transactions.
“I welcome the direction the Chief Minister is taking, especially in ensuring that our institutions remain dynamic, responsive, and focused on results,” Adiong said.
Adiong added that his constituents want to see a government that listens, acts decisively, and delivers, particularly in education, development, and peace-building.
“Positive changes and recalibrations in leadership should be seen as part of the continuing growth and maturity of the Bangsamoro government,” the Lanao del Sur governor said.
Sali said that changes in the MBHTE leadership are in the best interest of the Bangsamoro people.
He added that Macacua’s decision against Iqbal is a reflection of a strong commitment to responsive, principled, and transformative governance in the region.
“In light of persistent governance and accountability concerns, including issues raised in Commission on Audit (COA) findings on the use and management of public funds, this development also presents an important opportunity to reinforce transparency, integrity, and public trust in MBHTE and other regional institutions,” the Tawi-Tawi governor said.
Sali is hoping Macacua, in his concurrent capacity as education minister, will address long-standing concerns on the recruitment and deployment of hundreds of personnel to vacant teaching and non-teaching positions in Tawi-Tawi.
He added that the provincial government is looking forward to addressing dilapidated and inadequate school buildings, particularly in island municipalities.
Basilan Gov. Mujiv Hataman appealed to all sectors in BARMM to remain calm and vigilant amid the political tension.
Hataman, a governor of the defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), reminded his fellow Bangsamoro of their sacred duty to protect and uphold BARMM as it is a product of the decades of struggle of the mujahideen.
He said that issues surrounding the transition period should not deepen polarization among Bangsamoro people and suggested a dialogue to resolve these.
