Why can't everyone wait to get their hands on the Swatch x AP 'Royal Pop' collaboration

Globally, chaos, fights, and store shutdowns have erupted as shoppers rush to get a piece of the highly anticipated collection

There are a number of reasons why brands produce collaboration collections. It can be about cultural relevance, something purely driven by creative pursuit, or an effort to reach a certain demographic. More often than not, the latter becomes the driving force. Collaboration collections have the ability to generate hype and excitement, drawing in audiences beyond a brand’s usual market. A testament to that is Swatch’s latest partnership with luxury watch brand Audemars Piguet (AP).

Dubbed the “Royal Pop” collection, the line merges AP’s iconic 1972 Royal Oak with Swatch’s POP watches from the 1980s. The eight Swiss-made Bioceramic models are powered by Swatch’s signature SISTEM51 movement, now offered in a new hand-wound version backed by 15 active patents. SISTEM51 is considered a true industrial feat, as it is the only Swiss-made mechanical movement in the world assembled entirely through a 100 percent automated process.
The watches are designed to disrupt the “traditional way of wearing a watch,” with each piece coming with three interchangeable lanyards that offer different ways to style the timepieces.

“The watches in the AP × Swatch collaboration break free from the wrist, featuring a high-quality calfskin lanyard with contrasting stitching, allowing you to wear the watch in unexpected, playful, and dynamic ways,” Swatch said in a statement. “The choice is yours: around your neck, on your wrist, in your pocket, attached to a handbag, and more. There are no limits, with three lanyard lengths to choose from and a small removable stand that lets you turn it into a desk watch.”
The collection, which launched on May 16, has generated more than just hype. As fans flocked to stores in anticipation of the release, chaos, fights, and even store shutdowns were reported globally, including in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. In Asia, countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong reported people camping outside stores ahead of the collection’s release.
To avoid similar incidents in the Philippines, Swatch PH released a statement asking fans not to rush to stores in large numbers. “In some countries, queues of more than 50 people cannot be accepted, and sales may need to be paused,” the brand said.
However, Swatch assured fans that the “Royal Pop” collection “will remain available for several months.”
With the “Royal Pop” collection, Swatch and AP prove that modern collaborations are no longer just about watches. They are about creating cultural moments. By blending luxury heritage with playful accessibility, the partnership has managed to capture the attention of collectors, fashion enthusiasts, and a new generation of consumers eager to take part in the hype.
