Sorsogon town earns record P221,000 from tourism in 1 day

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – The municipality of Matnog, Sorsogon province earned P221,760, its highest single-day tourism revenue, on Saturday, May 16.
Mayor Bobet Lee Rodrigueza said on Monday, May 18, that Matnog logged 199 boat trips during the day with 1,765 tourists composed of 1,763 local and two foreign guests.
Matnog has long been recognized as one of the prime tourist destinations in the Bicol region because of the world-famous Subic Beach on Calintaan Island which has a distinctive pinkish-white sand.
The beach is a favorite destination for island-hopping, snorkeling, and swimming activities among tourists visiting Southern Luzon.
The town is also home to the popular Juag Fish Sanctuary, also known as Juag Lagoon, a privately operated marine sanctuary with 17,000-square meters of netted lagoon.
The sanctuary houses thousands of fish species, along with giant clams, lobsters, and sea cucumbers.
Rodrigueza said the local government, with assistance from the provincial government, has further improved the tourist experience at Subic Beach through ongoing development projects. “Subic Beach is now brighter because we installed more lights.”
Aside from the surge in tourist arrivals, Matnog recently staged the 1st Siram Matnog: Pagkaon Bikolnon Culinary Fest to showcase the town’s best food products and culinary heritage.
Rodrigueza said all 33 barangays participated by presenting two dishes each – one seafood and one vegetable – featuring local ingredients and traditional cooking techniques.
“From the savory curacha to rare vegetables like young galyang leaf and bago leaf, the cook fest was a roaring success,” the mayor said.
The MTCAO thanked tourists and stakeholders who contributed to the success of the municipality’s tourism activities.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to all the travelers who visited our beautiful islands, to our local government unit, and to our hard-working tourism team and staff who kept everything running smoothly. Your trust and support fuels our local economy.
