ABS-CBN losses expand but BINI, Coco Martin to boost revenues by June

Lopez-led multimedia firm ABS-CBN Corp. reported that its net loss expanded by 63 percent to ₱813 million in the first quarter of 2026 from the ₱500 million it lost during the same period last year, mainly due to the lack of election ads and lower Sky revenues.

The firm disclosed to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) on Monday, May 18, that consolidated revenue declined 21 percent to ₱3.33 billion, with cable TV and broadband accounting for most of the drop.

Consolidated operating expenses (opex) improved by 12 percent to ₱4.06 billion.

ABS-CBN’s content production and distribution business generated ₱2.76 billion in revenue for the first quarter, 13 percent lower year-on-year.

Advertising revenue was lower due to the presence of election-related advertising during the first quarter of 2025 and in line with the overall decline in the industry’s advertising expenditure versus the same period last year.

In addition, global developments this year have had a negative impact on consumer sentiment and the domestic economy. The absence of movies and major events during the first quarter also resulted in weaker overall revenue performance versus last year.

First-quarter revenues in 2025 were also boosted by BINI’s sold-out concert at Philippine Arena and the strong performance of the movie “My Love Will Make You Disappear.”

Revenues for the balance of 2026 are expected to improve significantly as Coco Martin is expected to return to primetime in June, while Star Cinema’s first movie for the year is expected to be released this May.

Also expected to boost revenues is BINI’s world tour, which is expected to kick off in June following the group’s strong showing at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last April.

Opex decreased five percent to ₱160 million and is expected to remain under control. Cuts to general and administrative expenses and employee costs accounted for ₱136 million of the reduction. - James A. Loyola
