The resignations of two party-list congressmen--both members of the majority--were announced on Monday night, May 18 during plenary at the House of Representatives.
Informing the House Committee on Rules about their resignations via separate letters were 1TAHANAN Party-list Rep. Nathaniel Oducado and PINOY WORKERS Party-list Rep. Franz Vincent Legazpi.
Deputy Majority Leader Zamboanga del Sur, 2nd district Rep. Jeyzel Victoria Yu read into record that the plenary received the letters from Oducado and Legazpi.
"Mr. Speaker, in view of the resignation...may we request that the secretary-general be directed to drop [the representatives' names] from the roll of members of the House of Representatives," Yu said.
Deputy Speaker Lanao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Yasser Alonto Balindong, the presiding officer at that time, carried Yu's motion to have Oducado and Legazpi's names removed from the official roll.
With the dual resignation, the total House membership in the current 20th Congress slightly dropped to 316.
During his nearly two-year tenure as congressman, Oducado held vice chairmanships from three committees--the Committees on Climate Change, on Housing and Urban Development, and on National Defense and Security.
Legazpi, on the other hand, served as vice chairman of the Committee on Land Use during his time at the lower chamber.
Unlike district representatives, nominees of party-lists are more easily replaced, since all that their respective groups have to do is to name the next nominee in line to fill up the vacated seat.
