A total of 13,571 families and 115 presidential scholars in Makati will receive rice assistance under the national government’s “Bawat Bayan Makikinabang” program, the Makati City government said on Monday, May 18.
Mayor Nancy Binay and President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. led the rollout of the initiative in the city.
Under the program, each beneficiary household will receive 10 kilos of rice every two months for four distribution cycles.
The beneficiaries were identified from participating barangays and include working-class families, senior citizens, and middle-income households.
Meanwhile, each participating barangay will receive P200,000 from the national government.
The amount will be divided into two components: P100,000 for educational support for five presidential scholars per barangay, with each scholar receiving P20,000, and another P100,000 for community development projects identified by the barangay as priority needs.
Barangays may use the funds for public service and disaster response equipment, including tents, CCTV systems, generators, and flood control materials.
“Knowing that they will have rice on their table, that their children will have support to stay in school, that their barangays will have what they need — that is what good governance looks like when it reaches the people who need it most. We are deeply grateful to the President for this,” Binay said.
The mayor also thanked Marcos for bringing the program to Makati.
“People see our city and they see the skyline, the business district, the economy. But behind all of that are thousands of families who wake up every day and work as hard as they can just to get by,” she said.
The city government said it will oversee the distribution of assistance and ensure that the funds reach the intended beneficiaries.
The initiative aims to direct national government resources to the barangay level in coordination with local government units.
“Makati is a prosperous city, but prosperity is never felt equally by everyone. There are families among us who need a little more support, and they deserve to receive it with dignity. This program from the President makes sure they do, and the City of Makati is honored to be part of delivering that,” Binay added.
