For those who believe that congressmen from "Imperial Luzon" or "Imperial Manila" were the ones who flexed their muscle in plenary to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte for the second time in two years, you're wrong.
Numbers highlighted by Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon on Saturday, May 16 showed that the great majority of House members from Vice President Duterte's supposed bailiwicks in the Visayas and Mindanao simply didn't show up to stop her most recent impeachment.
Last May 13, the House of Representatives voted 257-25-9 (yes-no-abstain) to adopt the articles of impeachment against Duterte. This plenary move resulted in her impeachment as well as the transmission of impeachment documents to the Senate.
“‘Yun pong 257 ay 80 percent ng kabuuan po ng Kamara. So overwhelming po ‘yung boto to impeach the Vice President,” Ridon said during the Saturday News Forum at Dapo Restaurant in Quezon City.
(The 257 votes represent 80 percent of the entire House. So the vote to impeach the Vice President was overwhelming.)
"Even within the strongest bailiwicks of the Vice President and Dutertes within Mindanao, within Cebu, within Visayas, hindi po ito nag-turn out for the Vice President (these didn't turn out for the Vice President),” Ridon pointed out.
Official House records showed that 43 out of 50 congressmen from the Visayas voted in favor of impeachment, while 41 out of 61 solons from Mindanao also voted "yes".
Moreover, the records showed that Luzon lawmakers overwhelmingly backed the impeachment, with 125 out of 142 of them voting in favor of it.
Vice President Duterte's conviction through Senate impeachment trial is being sought over her offices' alleged misuse of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds; untruthful declarations in the filing of her statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth; unexplained wealth; and death threats to President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez.
Vice President Duterte is a former Davao City vice mayor and mayor. Her family traces its roots to Cebu and Agusan del Norte.
Out of the 25 who voted "no" in plenary last Monday, eight came from Mindanao, six came from Visayas, five came from Luzon, and six came from the party-list bloc.
