BEFORE FAME: Rain almost changed the face that made him famous
We are all familiar with Rain, the global Korean superstar whose image has become instantly recognizable over the years. Fans could probably recall his facial features in detail — his eyes, nose, even his ears — but what many may not know is that early in his career, he almost changed the very look that would later define him.
In a recent appearance on the SBS radio program "Two O’Clock Escape Cultwo Show," Rain revealed that he once nearly underwent double eyelid surgery before his debut.
“I really was going to get double eyelid surgery back then,” Rain admitted during the show.
With pressure building around the idea, Rain said he eventually agreed — but when he consulted a plastic surgeon, the plan took an unexpected turn. The doctor refused to proceed, telling him that his features should not be altered.
“The doctor said, ‘This kid should not get this surgery,’” Rain recalled. “He said I had million-dollar ears and eyes. He told me that if I changed my eyes, then I would have to change my jaw, nose, and mouth too. He said the balance of my face was very good as it was.”
The surgeon’s decision reportedly left a lasting impression on Rain, especially given how uncommon it is for a cosmetic specialist to discourage a procedure.
“Honestly, it is not easy for a doctor to say something like that when surgery is their business,” he said. “He was a very famous doctor at the time.”
Looking back, the moment stands out as a quiet turning point in a career that would later see Rain debut in 1998, re-emerge as a solo artist under JYP Entertainment in 2002, and eventually rise as one of Korea’s most successful global entertainment exports.
