BACOLOD CITY – Police have filed charges against a 68-year-old woman and her 41-year-old son for allegedly killing a police officer and injuring two others in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Talaptap, La Castellana, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, May 12.
Police Major Romulo Gepilango, La Castellana police chief, said that homicide and frustrated homicide cases were filed against Edward Acupan, along with drug charges, while his mother, Delia, is facing frustrated homicide charges.
He said that murder and frustrated murder cases were initially filed but the prosecutor downgraded them.
Acupan was charged with homicide for stabbing Police Master Sgt. Davy Carampatana, an intelligence operative of the La Castellana Municipal Police Station, to death during the operation.
Police Capt. Michael Muñez, La Castellana deputy chief, and Police Corporal Gerson Guache, were allegedly stabbed and injured by Acupan’s mother.
In a radio interview, Acupan’s denied involvement in the incident and described police officers as pests. “Kung perwisyo kami sa ila, mas perwisyo sila sa amon eh (If were a nuisance to them, they’re even more of a nuisance to us),” she said.
She compared her situation in jail to the hardships she endured while working in a sugarcane field to enable her family to survive.
Gepilango said that Acupan was allegedly involved in gun-for-hire and robbery incidents in the town and neighboring areas and faced a case for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and illegal possession of explosives.
Acupan was injured and now detained at the police station after being discharged from the hospital.
Mayor Añejo Nicor and Vice Mayor Vice Mayor Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan condoled with the family of the victim and acknowledged the risks of a police officer in the line of duty.
“This is a lesson learned for men in uniform to review and enhance their training in police operations,” Mangilimutan, a former policewoman, said.
She urged the public to cooperate and help authorities by reporting suspicious individuals or activities to maintain peace and order in the town.
She assured assistance to the family of Carampatana and prayed for the fast recovery of the injured lawmen.
