A lava-related collapse generated a pyroclastic density current (PDC) or “uson” at Mayon Volcano’s southwestern slopes on Wednesday morning, May 13, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Phivolcs said lava effusion refers to the slow, non-explosive outpouring of lava, while PDCs are fast-moving, hazardous flows of hot gas and volcanic debris.
The activity occurred at 11:22 a.m. along the Mi-isi Gully and produced a volcanic plume that rose to about 4,000 meters before drifting southwest.
It lasted until around 11:37 a.m., based on Phivolcs monitoring data.
A series of PDCs accompanied by ash emissions triggered by lava collapse at Mayon Volcano was also recorded on May 2.
Over the past 24 hours, lava effusion has continued along the Basud, Bonga, and Mi-isi gullies on the volcano’s upper slopes, with flows remaining confined within established channels.
Advancing lava reached approximately 3.8 kilometers, 3.2 kilometers, and 1.6 kilometers along the respective drainages.
Intermittent strombolian activity was also observed, including short-lived lava fountaining.
A faint crater glow was visible, indicating ongoing near-surface magma movement.
Phivolcs also recorded 350 rockfall events, seven pyroclastic density currents, and 35 volcanic earthquakes. Of these, 26 were volcanic tremors lasting between seven and 84 minutes.
Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating intensified magmatic unrest and the continued possibility of hazardous eruption scenarios.
Under this level, lava flows, rockfalls, and pyroclastic density currents may persist on the upper southern and eastern slopes, while moderate explosive activity and additional lava fountaining remain possible.
Authorities reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer permanent danger zone remains strictly prohibited due to life-threatening volcanic hazards.
Residents within the eight-kilometer radius have also been advised to remain alert and prepare for possible evacuation should activity escalate further or if Alert Level 4 is raised.
Mayon has been under Alert Level 3 since January 6.
