DAYANGHIRANG
DAVAO CITY – A Davao City councilor commended on Tuesday, May 12, the 26 lawmakers who voted against the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, saying their decision shows political maturity and reflects the sentiments of many Filipinos.
In a privilege speech before the City Council, Committee on Finance, Ways, and Means, and Games and Amusement Chairman Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang thanked them for voting against House Resolution 989 and Committee Report 261.
"We Davaoeños appreciate these people who voted 'no' on the proposed determination of probable cause that the matter of impeachment be brought to the Senate," Dayanghirang said.
He said lawmakers who opposed the impeachment chose "principle over fear and conviction over convenience," despite possible political repercussions.
The councilor said the country should prioritize addressing economic and social issues rather than political conflicts, citing rising prices of rice, fuel, electricity, and other basic goods, as well as concerns among farmers, fisherfolk, small businesses, and workers.
Dayanghirang also pointed out issues in flood control, education, healthcare, peace and order, and disaster preparedness, saying Congress should focus on measures that directly benefit the public.
"Impeachment, especially when surrounded by political tension and division, can further distract government institutions, weaken investor confidence, and deepen instability at a time when unity and economic recovery are urgently needed," he said.
Dayanghirang acknowledged the outcome of the voting and said the minority position should still be respected. "Although the majority wins, we respect the minority, and we accept defeat."
Dayanghirang called on leaders across political parties to focus on national concerns such as job creation, food security, and peace and order. "The Filipino people deserve a government focused on service, not endless political confrontation," Dayanghirang said.
