BACOLOD CITY – Western Visayas pair Andrei Villanueva and Ma. Victoria Cruz took the spotlight by completing a six-gold haul in the dancesport youth category to become the most bemedalled athletes so far in the National PRISAA Games Tuesday, May 12.
Villanueva and Cruz put on a show with their chemistry, footwork, and impeccable timing, impressing before the massive crowd here at the Bacolod City College Gym to earn the judges’ nod and sweep the solo dance in Samba, Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, Pasa doble, and Jive, while also ruling the Grade A Latin Dance.
The two Central Philippine University standouts also defeated challenges along the way, especially Cruz who suffered an injury prior to the tournament.
“Hindi po namin ‘to ini-expect, patuloy lang po kami sa pagti-training at pinagbutihan naman po do’n para ma-achieve po namin ‘to,” said 15-year-old Cruz who is eyeing to take a tourism degree in college.
“Marami po kaming napagdaanan, pero nagtiwala lang po kami sa isa’t isa, tyaka malaking tulong din po talaga matagal na kaming magkakilala at napagtitibay po namin ‘yong relationship through gala, bonding,” added Villanueva, an aspiring doctor.
The longtime friends are also bound for Agusan Del Norte for this year’s Palarong Pambansa where they seek their first-ever gold as a pair.
Meanwhile, Filipino-Spanish Luis Jurado extended his brilliance in the boys swimming events, adding three gold medals to inch closer to a 7-gold sweep at the Panaad Park and Sports Complex.
Jurado, a 15-year-old tanker who dreams of becoming a national team member, reigned supreme in 1500m freestyle, and 4x200m medley and 4x400m freestyle relays, where he served as an anchor, to make it five golds under his name.
He still has 100m free later and 400m free this Wednesday, May 13.
Action in sepak takraw, softball, basketball 5v5 and 3x3, volleyball, beach volleyball, chess, boxing, archery, and karatedo are still in progress.
As of 2 p.m., Central Visayas remains on top in seniors with 42 golds, 23 silvers, and 12 bronzes, ahead of No. 2 Western Visayas (27-18-23) and No. 3 CALABARZON (20-14-7).
The region is also leading in the youth category with 48 gold, 27 silver, and 18 bronze medals.
