BSP launches online academy to help cashiers spot fake pesos
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is taking its fight against fake money online, launching a free digital academy to teach cashiers and bank tellers how to spot counterfeit pesos.
Central bank launched a new digital training platform aimed at fortifying the integrity of the nation's physical currency by equipping cash handlers with advanced authentication skills.
The program, dubbed the BSP E-Learning Academy-Know Your Money (BELA-KYM) course, debuted during a virtual event as part of the central bank's broader strategy to modernize financial literacy and security protocols.
By shifting to a self-paced, interactive online format, the BSP intends to standardize the technical proficiency of front-line financial workers across the country, ensuring that the Philippine peso remains protected against counterfeiting and improper handling.
Developed by the central bank’s internal currency experts, the curriculum provides a comprehensive deep dive into the physical security features of banknotes and coins. Beyond simple authentication, the course covers the legal framework governing the national currency, including specific BSP policies and regulations designed to preserve the physical quality of money in circulation.
The BSP expects a wide range of professionals to enroll, spanning from bank tellers and non-bank financial institution staff to cashiers in the retail sector.
As the primary gatekeepers of the cash ecosystem, these handlers play a critical role in preventing the entry of forged notes into the economy. Participants who successfully navigate the modules and complete the assessment will receive BSP-issued certificates, a credential the central bank hopes will elevate the professional standards of the domestic cash-handling industry.
