House Deputy Speaker Iloilo 3rd district Rep. Janette Garin has shown that she is unbothered by the recent references to her and Dengvaxia, despite what her congressman-colleagues might think.
Recently tagging Garin in Dengvaxia-related posts are "congressmeow" Cavite 4th district Rep. Francisco "Kiko" Barzaga and Batangas 1st district Rep. Leandro Legarda Leviste.
While she only responded to the latter's post, Garin made sure to point out that the efforts to revive risk diverting attention from the broader public health concerns faced by the country in previous years.
“The Dengvaxia scare became a distraction from the more fundamental public health challenges during the previous administration. It is unfortunate that there continue to be attempts to revive this issue despite the established fact that the cases filed against me have already been dismissed,” Garin said on Sunday, May 10.
The former Department of Health (DOH)-turned-congresswoman has also expressed concern over what she described as the continued circulation of unverified claims and testimonies linked to the controversy.
“It is also concerning that unverified autopsies and questionable testimonies continue to be used in attempts to damage my reputation. Nevertheless, we remain committed to the truth and will continue to face these issues through facts and proper processes,” she added.
Garin acknowledged Leviste’s post, which was a Mother’s Day greeting with Dengvaxia commentary mixed in.
“At the same time, I thank Cong. Lean for the Mother’s Day greetings. Malapit yan sa puso ko (He is close to my heart),” Garin said.
Earlier, the Batangas lawmaker said: Happy Mother's Day, Cong. Janette Garin! Kaya mo raw kailangang bumoto para sa impeachment dahil sa kaso mo sa Dengvaxia, ayon sa kaibigan mo. Pagkatapos ng botohan, sana maresolba na ang mga kaso mo.
(They say you need to vote for the impeachment because of your Dengvaxia case, according to your friend. After the voting, hopefully your cases will be resolved.)
Leviste was referring to the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte, which are pending before House plenary.
Garin, was the key official who implemented the P3.5-billion Dengvaxia mass immunization program in 2016, during the tail end of the previous Aquino administration.
The ex-DOH chief has since faced multiple criminal, graft, and negligence cases linked to alleged vaccine-related child deaths, though some charges have been withdrawn while others remain pending before courts.
