The heat index in Borongan, Eastern Samar soared to 48 degrees Celsius (°C) on Monday, May 11, the highest recorded so far this hot and dry season, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Several other areas across the country also experienced dangerously high heat indices as hot and humid conditions persisted due to the prevailing easterlies.
PAGASA’s monitoring showed Camiling, Tarlac registering a 45°C heat index.
Areas that recorded a 44°C heat index were Laoag City in Ilocos Norte, Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, Iba in Zambales, San Ildefonso in Bulacan, and San Jose in Occidental Mindoro.
Meanwhile, areas that logged a 43°C heat index included Batac in Ilocos Norte, Bacnotan in La Union, Aparri in Cagayan, Baler and Casiguran in Aurora, Muñoz in Nueva Ecija, Sangley Point in Cavite City, Cavite, Puerto Princesa City and Cuyo in Palawan, Iloilo City in Iloilo, and Davao City in Davao del Sur.
PAGASA also recorded a 42°C heat index in Quezon City, Sinait in Ilocos Sur, Dagupan City in Pangasinan, Echague in Isabela, Cubi Point in Subic Bay, Olongapo City, Ambulong in Tanauan, Batangas, Aborlan in Palawan, Virac in Catanduanes, Dumangas in Iloilo, Dipolog in Zamboanga del Norte, Surigao City in Surigao del Norte, Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur, and Butuan City in Agusan del Norte.
PAGASA classifies heat indices between 42°C and 51°C under the “danger” category, as heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, while heat stroke may occur with prolonged exposure or physical activity under the sun.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said Tropical Depression Caloy (international name: Hagupit) remains unlikely to directly affect the country.
PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda said “Caloy” will continue moving generally northwestward over the Philippine Sea in the next 12 hours and will remain far from the Philippine landmass.
The tropical cyclone is forecast to further weaken into a remnant low by Monday evening or early Tuesday morning, May 12.
Castañeda added that the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will continue to bring hot and humid weather across the country, with chances of afternoon or evening rain showers and thunderstorms.
