Yoo Hae-jin, Ryu Seung-ryong, Hyun Bin, Park Ji-hoon win at 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards
Actors Yoo Hae-jin and Ryu Seung-ryong emerged as the biggest winners at the Baeksang Arts Awards held on May 8 at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul.
The annual awards ceremony recognized excellence in South Korean television, film, and theater.
This year’s event was hosted for the eighth time by actress Bae Suzy, actor Park Bo-gum, and entertainer Shin Dong-yup.
Yoo Hae-jin and Ryu Seung-ryong each took home the coveted “daesang” or grand prize, the highest honor of the night.
Yoo Hae-jin won the grand prize for the box office hit The King's Warden, while Ryu Seung-ryong received the award for the drama The Dream Life of Mr. Kim.
“I was hoping for the Best Actor award, but when I didn’t win, I composed myself thinking, ‘I still have a long way to go,’” Yoo Hae-jin said, according to Korean media reports.
“Then, as the cameras started coming toward me, I thought they were going to announce the Best Picture award — but instead, I ended up receiving the Grand Prize.”
“The King’s Warden,” starring Park Ji-hoon and Yoo Hae-jin, is the No. 1 film in South Korea this year, recording 16.8 million in total admissions and revenue of $110.8 million based on Korean Film Council data.
"I believe acting is relative, but the reason I was able to immerse myself in the role was thanks to the great gaze and chemistry Park Ji-hoon provided. I am truly grateful," added Yoo Hae-jin.
Park Ji-hoon won best new actor in film for “The King’s Warden” and the Naver Popularity Award alongside Yoona of “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty.”
"I was a bit chubby before filming, but Director Jang Hang-jun believed in me and supported me, saying, 'It has to be you.' And I love senior actor Yoo Hae-jin as well," he said in his acceptance speech.
In the television category, the best drama award went to “You and Everything Else” while Hyun Bin won best actor for “Made in Korea” and Park Bo-young took home the best actress award for “Our Unwritten Seoul.”
Hyun Bin said, "Above all, I want to thank my wife Ye-jin, who is sitting in front of me, and my beloved son for supporting me so well during filming, and I love you. Our story is not over. We will return this fall with season 2. Please give us your support then as well."
Park Bo-young said, "I hated competition, and proving my worth every moment was overwhelming and difficult. I think the efforts I made with a very rough mindset—not wanting to fall behind, wanting to do well, or perhaps not wanting to lose—are what made me who I am today."
In the film category, “No Other Choice,” directed by Park Chan-wook, won best film while Park Jeong Min bagged best actor for “The Ugly” and Mun Ga Young won best actress for “Once We Were Us.”
