Lawyer Nicholas Kaufman has expressed gratitude to former president Rodrigo Duterte and his supporters as his request to withdraw as lead counsel before the International Criminal Court (ICC) awaits approval.
In a message sent to reporters, Kaufman described representing Duterte as a “privilege” and voiced confidence that the former president’s legal defense would continue smoothly even after his possible departure from the legal team.
“It has been a privilege for me to represent the former President,” he said.
“I thank both him and the many thousands of supporters who have shown their appreciation for my efforts on his behalf,” he added.
‘Tatay Digong in safe hands’
Kaufman also reassured Duterte supporters that the former president would remain under capable legal representation if the ICC grants his withdrawal request.
“If my withdrawal is approved, I am convinced that I will be leaving Tatay Digong in safe hands,” he said.
“May God bless the former President, the Duterte family, and the Filipino nation. Daghang Salamat!” he added.
Withdrawal request
The statement came a day after Kaufman formally asked the ICC for permission to withdraw as Duterte’s counsel ahead of the trial phase of the crimes against humanity case linked to the former president’s war on drugs.
In his filing before the ICC, Kaufman said his engagement as Duterte’s lawyer had “terminated” on March 31, 2026.
The filing also stated that Duterte wanted to reorganize his legal team and hire replacement counsel for the upcoming proceedings.
Kaufman earlier said he was confident that the continuity and effectiveness of Duterte’s legal representation would remain assured despite his planned withdrawal.
ICC case
The ICC recently confirmed charges of crimes against humanity against Duterte in connection with killings linked to his anti-drug campaign.
The case is now transitioning toward trial proceedings, with another status conference scheduled later this month.
