LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recognized the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in strengthening the region’s energy security, food systems, and social protection programs, President Marcos said.
Speaking during a press conference on the sidelines of the 48th ASEAN Summit here on May 8, Marcos said ASEAN agreed that technological innovation should remain “people-centered” and anchored on accountability and human judgment.
“AI and digital tools can sharpen energy forecasting, food system monitoring, and social protection delivery,” the President said.
“Provided they remain anchored in human judgment, accountability, and global standards,” he added.
People-centered approach
Marcos said ASEAN leaders agreed that the region’s response to current challenges — including energy insecurity and food supply concerns — must prioritize the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“Across all of these three priorities, ASEAN agreed that our response must remain people-centered,” the President said.
The ASEAN Summit this year focused heavily on the effects of the Middle East conflict, which has disrupted energy flows, trade routes, and food supply chains across the region.
ADB backs ASEAN initiatives
Marcos also welcomed the support pledged by Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda during the Summit’s plenary session.
According to the President, the ADB committed to supporting ASEAN programs on regional connectivity, capital markets, AI readiness, energy security, food security, blue economy, social protection, and health.
“We look forward to enhancing our cooperation with ADB through its planned support for major ASEAN initiatives,” Marcos said.
These initiatives include the ASEAN Power Grid, ASEAN Capital Markets Initiative, AI readiness programs, blue economy projects, and resilient river systems.
The President said regional cooperation and innovation would play a major role in helping ASEAN navigate global uncertainties while ensuring long-term resilience and sustainable growth.
