Written and directed by the multi-awarded Dr. Alegria O. Ferrer, the story follows Kenkoy, a young Filipino man who returns to his homeland after seeking work opportunities in the United States. Having struggled to adjust abroad, Kenkoy returns changed, imitating foreign ways and being a stranger to traditions and values. Through the influence of his loyal friend Bentot and Neneng, a simple barrio girl, Kenkoy eventually undergoes a journey of rediscovery, learning to once again appreciate his cultural roots and the humility that shaped him. The production serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of maintaining one’s identity even when exposed to global influences.
Dr. Alegria O. Ferrer is a Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Music and an Aliw Awards Hall of Fame Awardee. “We gain, and we lose identity on how we react and adapt to the events happening around us,” she states, emphasizing that the story of Kenkoy is particularly relevant now as a reminder of the virtues that make us who we are as Filipinos. She presses further on the importance of cultural identity when asked about the key takeaway of the piece. “Wherever you go, and whatever you do, take pride as a Filipino. Own your roots. Remember our best practices, share them.”
The production features a curated selection of Filipino musical works composed by leading Filipino music stalwarts and pioneers such as Nicanor Abelardo, Lucio San Pedro, Ernani Cuenco, Constancio de Guzman, Leopoldo Silos, Juan de Sahagun Hernandez, Manuel Velez, Mike Velarde, Santiago Suarez, Julio Esteban-Aguita, Jose Estrella, and Fulgencio Tolentino, with arrangements by Redentor L. Romero and Josefino Toledo. Si Kenkoy at ang Dalagang Bukid will also showcase ‘Sa Libis Ng Nayon’ by Sylvia La Torre as its ending piece.
