Marcos pushes more PPPs in BIMP-EAGA after adoption of Vision 2035
LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — President Marcos has called for stronger public-private partnerships (PPPs) within the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) following the adoption of the subregion’s Vision 2035 roadmap.
The President underscored the role of PPPs in accelerating the implementation of major infrastructure and development projects, particularly in underserved areas such as Mindanao and Palawan.
During the Special BIMP-EAGA Summit in Cebu, leaders of the four member-countries adopted the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 (BEV2035), a 10-year strategic framework aligned with the broader ASEAN Vision 2045.
Marcos, for his part, highlighted the Philippines’ experience with PPPs in fast-tracking high-impact projects.
The President specifically cited ongoing efforts of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) to facilitate PPP projects in Mindanao, one of the Philippines’ focus areas under BIMP-EAGA.
Among the identified Philippine priority projects under the initiative are the Laguindingan Airport Development and the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Grid.
‘SOAR’ vision
MinDA Secretary Leo Tereso Magno said the newly adopted roadmap would guide BIMP-EAGA toward becoming a “Socially Inclusive, Open, Aligned and Resilient” subregion.
“Yesterday, the four leaders of the four countries approved the way forward for BIMP-EAGA, BEV 2035, or the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035,” Magno said during a press briefing here on Friday, May 8.
“This is to make sure that underserved areas within the four countries… are developed,” he added.
The BIMP-EAGA Vision 2035 seeks to scale up growth in the subregion through stronger connectivity, food and energy security, digital transformation, and sustainability initiatives.
Under the roadmap, BIMP-EAGA is envisioned as a dynamic single production base integrated into regional and global value chains.
The Philippines also reaffirmed its commitment to advancing BIMP-EAGA as a platform for inclusive growth, resilience, and regional stability.
BIMP-EAGA is a subregional economic cooperation initiative established in 1994 to accelerate socioeconomic development and narrow regional disparities in geographically remote and less developed areas of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
For the Philippines, the initiative primarily covers Mindanao and Palawan.
