Sagay City to install surveillance cameras to catch sexual harassers
BACOLOD CITY – The city government of Sagay in Negros Occidental will install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on streets near the State University of Northern Negros (SUNN) to catch sexual harassers preying on students.
Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva said on Wednesday, May 6, that the matter was formally raised by the university administration headed by Dr. Renante Egcas during a meeting on Tuesday, May 5, prompting immediate action from the city government.
Initial investigation showed that some of the suspects were tricycle drivers believed to be operating illegally or without registration, making them difficult to identify and trace.
The mayor has convened the Peace and Order Committee, led by Councilor Sherwin Sy, together with tricycle operators and drivers’ associations, to address these incidents and strengthen student safety measures.
Planned security improvements include the installation of CCTV cameras from the university area to transport terminals and other key locations and additional street lights on the road from SUNN to Kauswagan to improve visibility and safety for students.
Cueva reminded transport operators and drivers that harassment of students will not be tolerated and warned that anyone proven responsible will face legal action.
He urged students to remain vigilant, travel in groups when possible, and document tricycle franchise numbers or driver IDs before riding.
Students were encouraged to share the information with family or friends and ride registered tricycles for easier monitoring and identification.
The university thanked the mayor, police, the Peace and Order Committee, and other stakeholders for their swift response and coordination in addressing safety concerns near the campus.
SUNN urged students to stay alert and immediately report suspicious behavior or incidents to authorities.
