Twelve years may have passed, but the memory still lingers for head coach Ramil de Jesus who vividly remembers the last time De La Salle University swept the eliminations and secured an outright Finals berth – only to suffer a heartbreaking ending in Season 76.
Though years have gone by, de Jesus continues to carry the lessons from that painful downfall, reminding the Lady Spikers not to repeat the same mistake in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament Finals.
“Sabi ko sa kanila ‘yong Season 76 bangungot sa team ‘yon eh,” said de Jesus after La Salle took the Finals opener over reigning champion National University Wednesday, May 6, before the massive crowd at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.La Salle took the Finals o
“Panahon nila Aby [Maraño], ‘yong na-sweep namin ‘yong elimination then ‘yong Ateneo tumapang hanggang dulo, sabi ko ayoko na maulit ‘yon, every year naman,” he added. “Ito na ‘yong pagkakataon na makabalik kami makaharap ang NU.”
The tragic end came after de Jesus and Co. slipped in the finale despite dominating their last 14 games during the elims. They squandered a thrice-to-beat edge and yielded to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, who were once powered by “The Phenom” and collegiate volleyball icon Alyssa Valdez.
It somehow eased the worries of de Jesus as the Taft-based squad overcame a slow start before demolishing NU to draw first blood in their best-of-three Finals series, a vengeful one after getting blanked by the very same nemesis last edition.
The win also marked the Lady Spikers’ 15th consecutive win this season, one win shy of ‘Sweet 16” – a feat which was most recently achieved by the Lady Bulldogs in Season 84 where super rookie Bella Belen took the spotlight with her historic debut.
“One thing ‘yong maganda na nanalo kami ngayon, at least makakatulog ng maayos, practice ulit, makakapagpahina, mas mahirap magpa-practice ka na masama loob mo,” de Jesus continued. “Mas maganda ‘yong maganda ‘yong loob.”
Angel Canino, Shane Reterta, Shevana Laput, and Amie Provido lifted La Salle offensively.
According to the players, their two-week break gave them enough time to rejuvenate and work on their individual skills they need before diving into the finals action. They also got encouraging words from former players CJ Saga and Lexi Tatlonghari.
“Hindi naman siya in a way na turuan kami na kung [anong gagawin], more on nimo-motivate kami na kaya namin,” said Canino. “Na andyan ‘yong mga ates to support us, but at the same time ‘yong paniniwala nila na kaya namin.”
Canino and the Lady Spikers try to complete their title redemption bid over the Lady Bulldogs this Saturday, May 9, at the same venue.
