Ilugin River now cleaner; water hyacinths converted to fuel

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Thursday, May 7, that the Ilugin River in Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig, has been cleared of 1,946 cubic meters of garbage and water hyacinths under the Bayanihan sa Estero Program since October 2025.

MMDA General Manager Nicolas Torre III personally visited the site, together with Pasig City Vice Mayor Dodot Jaworski, Congressman Roman Romulo, and Councilor Angelou de Leon, as well as MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Asec. David Angelo Vargas and Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office (FCSMO) Director Mark Navarro, to inspect the results of the program along the Ilugin River.
To maintain cleanliness, Torre urged city officials to strengthen coordination to improve the collection and removal of water hyacinths.
In his proposal, the local government will be responsible for collecting and drying the water hyacinths before turning them over to the MMDA. The agency will then process them into charcoal briquettes, which will be returned to the LGUs.

Meanwhile, Jaworski and De Leon urged residents in the city to take part in maintaining the cleanliness of the waterway.
“Ang simpleng tamang pagtatapon ng basura at pag-aalaga sa ating mga daluyan ng tubig ay malaking hakbang upang makatulong sa pag-iwas sa pagbaha at pagpapanatili ng kaayusan sa ating lungsod (Proper waste disposal and care for our waterways are simple yet important steps in helping prevent flooding and maintaining order in the city),” De Leon said.
“We have clearly witnessed the significant improvement in the condition of the river compared to before, a proof that through the collective efforts of the government and the community, a cleaner, more orderly, and safer environment for every Pasigueño is possible,” she added.
