A 38-year-old sedan driver linked to a P1,500 gas-and-run incident at a gasoline station in Barangay Bahay Toro, Quezon City, surrendered to police on Wednesday night, May 6.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said the suspect voluntarily appeared before authorities after the incident that occurred in the early hours of May 3 along Mindanao Avenue. He allegedly left the station without paying for the fuel he had already loaded.
Upon surrender, the driver personally apologized to the 20-year-old pump attendant and expressed willingness to settle the unpaid P1,500 fuel bill.
In his statement, the suspect said he panicked after receiving a call from his wife informing him that their child was suffering from asthma, prompting him to leave the gasoline station in haste.
“Natataranta po ako... medyo tuliro po ako kaya hindi ko na naisip kung na-scan ba iyon o hindi na-scan (I was panicking and felt disoriented, so I no longer thought about whether it had been scanned or not),” the driver told investigators.
The police will temporarily impound the suspect’s vehicle, which has also been placed under alarm in connection with the incident.
As a consideration, the management of the gasoline station did not deduct the unpaid P1,500 from the pump attendant’s salary.
Police officers also pooled personal contributions to extend assistance to the attendant, helping ease the burden he experienced.
QCPD said an estafa complaint will be filed against the suspect in connection with the case.
