Starting May 20, the minimum wage of domestic helpers, or kasambahay, in Zamboanga Peninsula Region will increase by P500 to P1,000, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.
This, after the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board of Region IX approved the wage increase petition that granted P500 increase to kasambahay working in chartered cities and first class municipalities in the region and P1,000 to first class municipalities in the province of Sulu.
Sulu used to be part of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao but when it voted no on the plebiscite for the inclusion to the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), it was included in Region IX based on President Marcos’ executive order that was anchored on a Supreme Court decision.
The recent wage increase made the minimum monthly wage in cities and first class municipalities P6,000.
The order covers the cities of Dapitan, Dipolog, Isabela, Pagadian, Zamboanga; and the Provinces of Zamboanga Del Norte, Zamboanga Del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay.
In Sulu, it covers the towns of Indanan, Jolo, Parang, Patikul, Siasi and Talipao
On the other hand, a P500 increase was also granted to kasambahay in other towns and cities of the region, including the rest of the towns in Sulu. The minimum monthly wage in these areas is P5,500.
Based on the DOLE data, there are almost 19,000 domestic helpers in Zamboanga Peninsula Region, more than 2,400 of them have a live-in arrangement with their employers.
