Senior citizens, drivers receive rice aid in Mandaluyong
Senior citizens aged 65–79, along with jeepney and tricycle drivers, received 10 kilos of rice in Mandaluyong City on Wednesday, May 6, under the Local Government Support Fund-Financial Assistance to Local Government Units of the national government.
Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita “Menchie” Abalos, together with Vice Mayor Anthony Suva Jr. and Barangay Captain Carlito Cernal of Addition Hills, led the simultaneous distribution of 10 kilos of rice in the city’s 27 barangays.
The first tranche of the distribution was held at the evacuation center at Acacia Lane Extension, Barangay Addition Hills.
Abalos urged barangay captains to implement house-to-house delivery of rice for senior citizens, particularly those who may have difficulty carrying 10 kilos.
She added that drivers no longer need to line up, as they may claim their rice allocation at barangay halls while continuing to ply their routes.
The local government said the program’s beneficiaries include more than 19,000 senior citizens (aged 65–79) and over 6,000 drivers.
Since beneficiary selection was left to the discretion of local government units, Abalos said they prioritized drivers as they were among those most affected by rising fuel costs amid the Middle East crisis.
She added that only senior citizens aged 65–79 were included, as those aged 80 and above continue to receive regular benefits from the city government.
After this month’s distribution, beneficiaries will receive another 10 kilos each in July, September, and November.
The local government said the program aims to ease the burden of beneficiaries amid the continued rise in prices of basic goods and ensure that no one is left behind in the city’s social services.
