Amid the more vocal and aggressive stand of the Office of the Ombudsman especially against top government officials linked to corruption, the agency has recorded a noticeable increase in the number of applicants seeking employment.
In fact, Assistant Ombudsman for Internal Affairs Luigi Bonoan said they received more than 3,500 applications for 114 permanent positions since the slots were opened last month.
Positions for lawyers and even non-lawyers were opened for a multi-disciplinary approach to combating corruption.
He attributed the increase in what he described as a heed to the call for integrity, accountability and good governance in the fight against corruption.
“It says that a lot of people believe in what we’re doing here. People want to be part of the good fight,” said Bonoan.
Netizens noticed the sudden visibility of the Office of the Ombudsman on big-time cases of corruption that include probe into congressmen and senators.
The Office of the Ombudsman is in the thick of investigating and prosecuting alleged kickbacks and anomalies in the country’s flood control projects as well as the procurement and implementation of other government infrastructure programs.
Bonoan said having more candidates to choose from will further strengthen the Ombudsman’s prosecution of corruption cases.
“We’re not just looking to fill positions. We’re looking to build a strong organization. The best way to do that is to get the best people,” Bonoan said.
“It can’t just be legal and purely investigatory. We want specialized people. We want engineers, accountants, even medical professionals,” he added.
